How to Reduce MEPCO Electricity Bill

Practical tips to lower your MEPCO bill by 20–40%

MEPCO بجلی کا بل کم کریں — آسان اور عملی طریقے

MEPCO Slab Alert: If you consume 201 units instead of 199, your entire bill jumps — not just the extra 2 units. Understanding slabs is the single biggest saving opportunity.

Understanding MEPCO's Slab System — The Key to Saving

MEPCO charges electricity using a progressive slab tariff regulated by NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority). The more units you consume, the higher the rate per unit — for ALL units, not just the extra ones:

Units Slab Rate/Unit Monthly Saving vs Next Slab
1 – 100 unitsRs. 5.79Best Rate
101 – 200 unitsRs. 13.75Good Rate
201 – 300 unitsRs. 20.19↑ Rs.6.44/unit jump
301 – 400 unitsRs. 24.12↑ Rs.3.93/unit jump
Above 700 unitsRs. 35.85Highest Rate

Key insight: If you consume 205 units, you pay Rs.20.19 on ALL 205 units. But if you cut just 6 units (to 199), you pay Rs.13.75 on units 101–199. That single change saves Rs.1,295 per month. Use our MEPCO bill calculator to see exact savings for your usage.

Proven Ways to Reduce Your MEPCO Bill

1

Set AC to 26°C — Not 18°C

Air conditioners are the single biggest contributor to high MEPCO bills. Every degree below 24°C increases electricity consumption by approximately 6%. Setting your AC to 26°C instead of 20°C saves roughly 36% on AC electricity cost alone.

Tips: Use "Auto" mode, clean filters monthly, and use ceiling fans alongside AC to feel cooler at higher temperatures.

2

Replace Electric Geyser with Solar Water Heater

Electric geysers use 2,000–3,000 watts and are often left on for hours. A family using a geyser for 2 hours daily consumes 100–180 units per month on heating alone — pushing you into higher slabs.

Solution: Solar water heaters cost Rs.25,000–40,000 but pay back within 12–18 months in MEPCO savings. In summer, they eliminate geyser use completely.

3

Switch All Bulbs to LED

Replacing a 60W incandescent bulb with a 9W LED saves 51W per bulb. For a home with 10 bulbs running 8 hours daily, this saves 40+ units per month — at 201+ unit slab, that's over Rs.800/month.

Cost: LED bulbs cost Rs.150–300 each and last 15,000+ hours vs 1,000 hours for regular bulbs.

4

Upgrade to Inverter AC or Refrigerator

Old non-inverter ACs run at full power constantly. Inverter ACs adjust their speed and use 30–50% less electricity on average. Similarly, old refrigerators (10+ years) can use 3x more electricity than new 5-star models.

ROI: An inverter AC saves 100–150 units per month in peak summer, worth Rs.2,000–3,000 in MEPCO charges.

5

Unplug Standby Appliances

Appliances in standby mode (TV, chargers, microwave) consume "phantom load" — typically 5–10% of total consumption. Unplug devices not in use or use power strips with on/off switches.

Common culprits: TV set-top box, WiFi router, microwave, computer with power brick, mobile chargers left plugged in.

6

Check Your Meter for Accuracy

If your bill suddenly increased without change in habits, request a meter test from MEPCO. You can lodge a complaint at your subdivision office. Faulty meters and wiring leaks (current theft from damaged insulation) can cause unexpectedly high bills.

How to check: Turn off all appliances and main switch. If meter still runs, you have a wiring leak — call an electrician immediately.

Electricity Consumption by Appliance

Approximate monthly units consumed (based on typical Pakistani household usage):

AC (1.5 ton, 8 hrs/day) 240–360 units/month
Electric Geyser (2 hrs/day) 90–150 units/month
Refrigerator (old, always on) 60–90 units/month
Washing Machine (1 hr/day) 30–50 units/month
Iron (1 hr/day) 45 units/month
Ceiling Fan (12 hrs/day) 15–25 units/month
LED TV (4 hrs/day) 10–20 units/month
LED Bulbs (10 bulbs, 6 hrs) 5–15 units/month

* Values are approximate. Actual consumption depends on usage hours, appliance age, and model efficiency.

Seasonal Strategy — Summer vs Winter

Summer (May–Sep) Tips

  • Set AC to 26°C or above
  • Use AC timer — turn off at night
  • Solar water heating (no geyser needed)
  • Keep AC filters clean every 2 weeks
  • Use natural ventilation in evenings
  • Don't run AC when leaving the house

Winter (Nov–Feb) Tips

  • Replace electric heater with gas heater
  • Use solar geyser or gas geyser
  • Use blankets instead of room heaters
  • Insulate windows to retain heat
  • Don't use electric room heaters (very high wattage)
  • Don't leave geyser on for hours
