How to Read Your MEPCO Electricity Bill — Complete Guide 2026

Your MEPCO electricity bill contains a lot of numbers and fields. Most people only look at the total amount — but understanding each field can help you catch billing errors, reduce your consumption, and avoid late payment surcharges.

This guide explains every section of a MEPCO bill in simple language.

1. Reference Number (REF NO)

The reference number is a 14-character code at the top right of your bill. It ends with either U (Urban) or R (Rural). You need this number to check your bill online. It changes every few months — so always use the number from your latest physical bill.

2. Consumer ID

Your Consumer ID is a permanent number that never changes. It is printed under the "CONSUMER ID" heading on every bill. Use this if your reference number does not work in the online search.

3. Units Consumed

This shows how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity you used during the billing period (usually 1 month). Your bill shows: Present Reading minus Previous Reading = units consumed. You can verify this by reading your meter yourself.

4. Tariff Category

This tells you which tariff rate applies to your connection. Common categories:

  • A-1(U) — Domestic Urban (city household)
  • A-1(R) — Domestic Rural (village household)
  • B-1 — Small commercial (shops, offices up to 5 kW)
  • A-3a/A-3b — Agricultural (tube wells)

5. Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA)

FPA is a variable charge that changes every month based on the cost of fuel used to generate electricity. It can be positive (extra charge) or negative (rebate). This is determined by NEPRA and applies to all MEPCO consumers equally.

6. GST, Electricity Duty and TV Fee

ChargeRate
GST (General Sales Tax)18%
Electricity Duty (ED)1.5%
TV FeeRs. 35/month

7. Arrears and Due Date

Any unpaid amount from previous months appears as arrears. Your bill shows two totals — one for paying before the due date and a higher amount after. The difference is the Late Payment Surcharge (LPS) of 10%. Always pay before the due date to avoid this extra charge.
